Luke 24:1-12

“Was Jesus Really Resurrected?”

Happy Easter, everyone!  Again this year, to everyone with us in person and online, it is my honor and joy to celebrate with you the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Christ’s return to life is at the heart of the Good News, on which we stand and build our lives.  In a Christian view of the world’s history, along with its creation, the time sin and death entered it, and the time God will restore all things and take His people to live with Him in heaven, the cross and resurrection are the central events of all time.  There is no way to understand reality accurately without them, from this viewpoint.  That is why the Apostle Paul says, “And if Christ has not been raised, what we preach doesn't mean anything” (I Corinthians 15:14a).  He continues, “And if Christ has not been raised, your faith doesn't mean anything. Your sins have not been forgiven. Those who have died believing in Christ are also lost” (15:17-18).

But did the resurrection really happen?  Are the Bible stories about it that we read each Easter true?  What if they are just wishful thinking?  Or maybe they are not based on historical events but literature created by people who wanted to express eternal truths such as the goodness of love and peace and community?

The way you understand the Bible’s Easter stories will have a huge impact on your whole life.  And you can hear many arguments both for and against the resurrection of Christ today.  Actually, this debate has been happening ever since the first people announced that Jesus’ body was missing.  So there is a lot we can learn from people who have thought about it carefully.  They can help us unlock some of the words of the Bible that can sound quite mysterious to our modern ears.

One person who writes and speaks a good deal about this topic is Dr. John Lennox.  He is originally from Northern Ireland but now is a Professor of Mathematics at Oxford University and has studied, taught, and researched at a number of universities in Britain—including Cambridge—as well as in Germany and North America.  Besides his work in mathematics, he has done a great deal of

writing, speaking, and debating about the connections between science, philosophy, and religion.

You can find many of his lectures, discussions, etc., online.  Some of them deal directly with the question of Jesus’ resurrection.  One is a lecture at Harvard University, “Miracles: Is Belief in the Supernatural Irrational?”  Another is “Can a Scientist Believe in the Resurrection?”—a Veritas Forum lecture.  In them he presents Christian answers to various questions people often raise when talking about Christ’s resurrection.  Let’s look at a few of them.  I’ll try to present them in an understandable form.  I hope that will help us understand the message of Easter more clearly and receive it more freely.

Some difficulties in believing in Christ’s resurrection center on its being a miracle story.  Uneducated people from long ago did not know any better, so they were willing to believe that miracles happened.  But we today have learned better, so we know that such things are not possible.  That is the argument.  But looking carefully at the Bible stories, we see that in many cases, miracles were difficult for them to believe, as well.  In today’s reading (v. 11), the women who first saw the empty tomb went and reported that to the other followers of Jesus.  “But the apostles did not believe the women. Their words didn't make any sense to them.”  In the Christmas story, when Joseph learned that his fiancé Mary was pregnant and knew that he was not the father, it’s not as if he didn’t know where babies come from.  He was going to cancel plans for the marriage.  It took a clear message from God to change his mind.

One of the “new atheists,” Richard Dawkins, recently has made the claim that since the 1800s it has not been possible for an educated person to believe in miracles such as the virgin birth.  But if you look at the list of Nobel Prize winners from 1900 to 2000, you see that over 60% of them said that they believed in God.  All those award-winning scholars were actually uneducated people?  Did they claim to be Christians but reject the teachings of Christ about miracles?  Actually, you can find many intelligent people who believe in God and miracles today, along with brilliant people who do not.  Deciding that differences in belief are simply the difference between smart and stupid is more of an insult than a reasonable argument.

Another closely-related idea you may often hear is that things like dead people coming to life again are simply not possible in the first place.  So-called miracles break the laws of nature.  Therefore they cannot happen and should not be believed.  But the Bible writers never claim that there are no laws of nature, or that they are not important.  They are.  That is why Luke says, for example, in v. 12 that Peter went to Jesus’ tomb, “bent over and saw the strips of linen lying by themselves. Then he went away, wondering what had happened.”  You don’t wonder about things like that if you don’t think it’s normal for people who die to stay dead.

The viewpoint that God seems to have and show through the Bible writers is that the laws of nature are very important because they are God’s laws.  And because they are His, He can choose to make exceptions if He wants to do so.  As the Creator of nature, He is free, not a prisoner of the laws He has made.  Another British scholar, C. S. Lewis, gave an example along these lines.  Imagine I am staying at a hotel, and one day I put \100,000 in a drawer.  The next day I put another \100,000 in that drawer.  I go out and, when I come back, only \50,000 is in the drawer.  Do I decide that the laws of math have been broken?  Or do I decide that the laws of this country have been broken?

The laws of math have not been broken, of course.  In the same way, miracles do not break the laws of nature.  They are exceptions to these laws.  Christians have to believe in the laws of nature in order to even talk about miracles like the resurrection in a sensible way.  But we do not need to say that those laws explain all of life.  The drawer can be opened and closed, and a person such as a robber can come into that drawer and change what stays there and what doesn’t.  In the same way, the natural world is not a closed system but an open one.  Of course we as humans are very limited in what we can do to change nature.  But it is a mistake to think that because we are that way, God must be, too.  There is nothing in science that proves God does not exist or that a God who made the laws of nature could not step in and suspend them at certain times if He chose to do so.

The role of science is to explain how the natural world normally, routinely, predictably works in ways that can be seen, understood, and checked.  It is like that because a rational God created it to work in a rational way, and He gave human beings minds that are able to use the gift of reason.  We use it to discover more and more of Him through discovering how His natural world works.  But God is free to make exceptions if He wants.  To insist that this could never happen is like saying, “Which is true: (1) ‘Henry Ford existed,’ or (2) ‘Cars can run using an internal combustion engine’?  You have to choose.”  Of course both are true.  The creator of the car existed, and he made its engine to work in a certain way.  Describing how things work and believing in a Creator are not mutually exclusive things.  The two can go together with no conflict at all.  So to believe the angels’ words (v. 6)—“Jesus is not here.  He has risen!”—you do not have to turn off your brain or force yourself to believe something even though you know it is impossible.  This is something you and I can know through faith.

But of course someone will ask, “Can you prove it?”  Verse 3 tells us, “When (the women) entered the tomb, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.”  Does that alone prove that Jesus came to life again?  Of course not.  A negative (no body there) does not prove a positive (Jesus alive again), does it.  Maybe He didn’t really die, as some Muslims believe, and somehow escaped.  Well, how about in v. 36 of the same chapter?  “The disciples were still talking about this when Jesus himself suddenly stood among them. He said, ‘May peace be with you!’”  Seeing Him with their own eyes would prove the resurrection, right?  But how do we know they weren’t just imagining things?  How do we know Luke is telling us the truth?  See what I mean?  There’s always some reason for doubt that you can find somewhere, however small, if you keep looking for it.  Of course you can never get the certainty level up to 100% if you must have absolute, mathematical proof that this event took place.

But Dr. Lennox points out something important.  If you are looking for 100% mathematical proof of something, you will only find it in mathematics.  Even scientists in the other natural sciences work with a certain amount of uncertainty all the time.  For example, one key question of science is how the natural world came to exist, but no one insists that the only way you can do good research on that is to create the world again and see if things turn out the way you think they will.  Scientists work within the limits of human knowledge all the time.  That does not mean that evidence is not important.  It is very important not only in science today but to the Bible writers telling about the resurrection, too.  They look where the weight of the evidence is.  They know that they have to be a little like Sherlock Holmes.  Police, lawyers, judges, and juries do this all the time.  Loan officers at banks don’t expect 100% objective certainty that you can pay back your loan, but they normally expect to see evidence that you can.  Then, in the end, they have to make a judgment based on the facts as they have them.

Do my family members love me?  I can confidently say that I know the answer to this question.  Chieko and I have been married for almost 28 years, and she and our girls show me their love in many ways every day, even when I make it difficult for them.  I don’t have perfect mathematical proof of that, but then I don’t really need or expect to have that kind of knowledge.  That’s not the only way to know something, and life doesn’t work like that.

The Apostle John understands this, so he builds his case for Jesus’ resurrection, then tells us at the very end of his gospel:

Jesus did many other miraculous signs in front of his disciples. They are not written down in this book. But these are written down so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. If you believe this, you will have life because you belong to him.

The key question, then, is not what is proved beyond question but what is convincing about the stories of Jesus’ resurrection.  For one thing, Luke tells us that it is “The women” who first see that Jesus’ body is gone (vv. 1-3) and tell the news to the others (vv. 9-10).  In the culture where this took place, what we call gender-based discrimination was everywhere, and the status of women was extremely low.  For example, their testimony was not admitted in court because they were not considered reliable witnesses.  (In that way, it was like the testimony of shepherds, who first heard the news of Jesus’ birth.)  So if you were making up a story trying to convince people of something that wasn’t true, women are about the last people you would put in it to try and sound believable.  In my culture there are lots of jokes about lawyers and used car salesman that picture them as dishonest.  If you were making up a story, you probably would not ask them to be the ones to go around telling it for you.

Also, look at the change that came into the disciples’ lives through meeting the resurrected Jesus.  From people who ran away when Jesus was arrested, then hid behind closed doors for fear of the nation’s religious leaders, they are dramatically transformed into people who are willing to go out in the streets and announce in public that Jesus has come back to life (Acts 1-4, for example), even knowing that their boldness could get them in big trouble.  Eventually persecution begins, some of Jesus’ followers have to escape to save their lives, and others are killed for their faith.  But even then, they believe it is worth it.  It is very difficult to imagine that they would be willing to put their lives at risk and hang their futures on Jesus’ being alive if that was really true only in some symbolic or imaginary or general moral sense.  That kind of radical change comes about because they have really, literally met the risen Christ, the writer tells us.  That is a remarkable amount of evidence, the kind that asks us to make a decision about believing it.

Dr. Lennox, and I think the gospel writers also, advise people to be skeptical.  We should look for evidence and not simply believe a miracle story just because we hear it from someone who is good at arguments or whatever.  Faith is not believing in spite of having no evidence, as some people mistakenly say.  John Lennox’s conclusion, along with Dr. Luke’s and that of all the Bible writers, is that the evidence is there.  The historical evidence to back up the stories in the Bible in general is extremely strong, even when compared with other well-known stories from history.  How many documents from the past do you have to have to believe, for example, that the Peloponnesian War really happened?  Compare that number and their quality with those that exist to support the Bible stories, and you see a remarkable amount of evidence that the Bible is reliable.  In the case of the Easter stories, the evidence there gives reasons plenty strong enough to support our belief that Christ did, in fact, rise from the dead.

So what should we take from all this?  I think that we have great reasons to be fans of science, welcome it, support it, celebrate it, and work hard in it.  It is a wonderful tool which can lead us to a deeper knowledge and love of God.  All truth is God’s truth, so we don’t need to be afraid of learning, whether in science or any field.  How could we see the first picture of a black hole recently in the news and not respond in awe at the amazing work of our Father, the Creator?  But, as wonderful as it is, science is a poor substitute for God.  It has never been able to answer all of life’s questions or meet all our deep needs, and we invite many troubles when we try to get it to do these things.  When we follow people who try to turn science into scientism and live by secular values that try to replace God with science, trouble results.

Also, we have strong reasons to be confident in the claims of the gospel.  It gives us a firm foundation on which to stand.  Christ is alive and active in our lives and around the world today.  But we must let this Easter faith open us up and not close us down.  We must let it make us more and not less imaginative, more and not less willing to consider fresh possibilities.  We have some great models from the past such as the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis, and The Lord of the Rings, J. R. R. Tolkien, among many others, to show us the way.  We have no reason to accept the claim that a life of faith slows you down, boxes you in, limits you.  If this happens, maybe we are not walking by faith.  So let’s find our own, unique ways to live in light of the resurrection, as open, empowered, life-filled people of God.  Let’s ask Him now to help us do this.

God of possibilities, God of the unstoppable power of love, God of Easter, praise you for the gift of life and all the ways you restore and renew and re-offer it to us.  Help us to rejoice with you today in the celebration of the return to life of your Son Jesus.  In all the ways you imagine for us in your good plans, help us to learn to live in the truth and the power of His resurrection.  In His name we pray, amen.
