Free from Addiction, Free to Live Under God’s Direction

I’d like to continue with you today the journey through the various places in God’s word that tell us how to be free.  We have been discovering the ways that, when people come to know Christ as our Savior and Lord, He sets us free from things that pull us down and free to do things that lift us up.  One big part of modern life where many people find our great need to be made free is in the area of addiction.

In my home country, the U.S., there is a major problem of opioid addiction.  The number of Americans dying each year from drug overdoses is over 72,000, many of them involving opioids.  That’s more than the number from the U.S. who died in the entire Viet Nam War, just in one year.

Many people have less life-threatening but very damaging addictions today to things such as video games.  In the U.K., in over 200 divorces already this year, one partner’s playing the online multi-player shooting game Fortnite too much was noted specifically.

NHK News reported a couple of days ago that 930,000 Japanese junior and senior high school students have an addiction to Internet use.  It described the serious threat it is to their current health, development, future life, and even survival.

You may be thinking, “Good thing I don’t have any addictions.  I hope this message helps someone who really needs it.”  But how about habits we may become unable to control sometimes like shopping?  People in the U.S. spent twice as much last year on things like jewelry, books, and phone equipment as they did in 2002.  And the number of storage facilities to store all of our stuff was double what it was 20 years ago.  What do you have to do to the environment to produce that many things?  What does the debt people go into to buy that many things do to their ability to help people in need around them?

These are modern addictions, but human beings have always over-depended on things which cannot bring happiness and do bring great damage to our lives when we misuse them.  Paul, the writer of the words from Romans 6 that we just now read, writes to another group of Christians in the city of Corinth.  In Corinthians 6:9-11a, he confronts them with a number of sins they seem to still be committing, even though they have said they are now followers of Christ.

Don't you know that evil people will not receive God's kingdom? Don't be fooled. Those who commit sexual sins will not receive the kingdom. Neither will those who worship statues of gods or commit adultery. Neither will men who are prostitutes or who commit homosexual acts. Neither will thieves or those who always want more and more. Neither will those who are often drunk or tell lies or cheat. People who live like that will not receive God's kingdom. Some of you used to do those things.

Did you hear what was in that list?  That pretty much covers all of us, doesn’t it.  Men and women, old and young, rich and poor, homosexual and heterosexual, we all have areas of our lives that are not pleasing to God.  Our cultures tend to make some sins horrible and conveniently forget about others.  Sexual sins of all kinds, for example, get a lot of attention, but Paul puts right there with them things like being greedy and not telling the truth.  If I can’t stop working, even on my so-called days off, I may be a “workaholic.”  If I can’t put down my smartphone, even when people are talking to me, if I get a little free time and without any reason just feel I need to fill it by looking at a glowing screen of some kind, I may have stopped being a free human being.  If I am always looking for ways to ignore rules and laws to make more money in my business, that habit of cheating can become my master, the Bible says.  If I can’t go into a shop without buying something before I leave, “shopaholism” has a hold on me.  If we are honest, we can probably all find some kind of addictive behavior in some area of our life.

And this is not a small problem.  Jesus Himself has told us (John 8:34a), “Everyone who sins is a slave of sin.”  II Peter 2:19b says, “A person is a slave to anything that controls him.”  Then here in Romans 6, Paul reminds us (16b), “. . . When you give yourselves to obey someone you become that person's slave. . . .”  And this is not just a general idea—it’s personal.  He tells the members of the church in Rome (v. 20a), “Once you were slaves of sin.”

We may not like to think of ourselves as slaves.  We may like to see ourselves as bold, free-thinkers who are unafraid of breaking traditions and rules to live as liberated people.  But Paul points out in v. 16b (The Message), that there are “some acts of so-called freedom that destroy freedom.”  In our struggle to be more fully free, it is very possible for us to misunderstand freedom and end up doing things that put us in bondage.

To people in that kind of trouble—people like us—God gives a word of hope in Romans 6.  He teaches that, when you have placed your life in His hands, (1) sin will not be your master, (2) Christ is your Master, and (3) living with Christ as your Master in fact sets you free.  Let’s focus on those three things today.

(1) To people who have committed themselves to following Christ, Paul makes the strong claim (v. 14), “Sin will not be your master.”  He does not say, “Sin should not be your master” or “. . . need not be your master.”  It “will not.”

Likewise, in v. 6b he has already said, “We are no longer slaves of sin.”  Then in v. 22a: “You have been set free from sin.”

Paul tells us as Christians that we have died to sin.  That goes beyond simply having your sins forgiven.  He is putting his finger on a major problem that Christ-followers can often have.  It is very possible for us to have repented of our sin, asked God to forgive us based on Christ’s death on the cross, and welcomed Him into our hearts as our personal Savior, yet never gone beyond that.

If we stop there, we are only living in part of the gospel.  We may be Christians who have received forgiveness but never experienced deliverance from sin’s power.  There are many who identify as Christians and have had their sins forgiven but continue to live under the control of sin.  They have not learned to place their lives under the control of Christ.  At the heart of the Christian faith is the teaching that Jesus is Savior and Lord.  If we only get the Savior part but do not learn how to place our thoughts, words, and actions under His control from day to day, we will not know Him as Lord, and we will not live as fully free human beings.

The Message version of the Bible in 6:2-3 puts it in words that show clearly what freedom from addiction is: a new home.

If we've left the country where sin is sovereign, how can we still live in our old house there? Or didn't you realize we packed up and left there for good? That is what happened in baptism. When we went under the water, we left the old country of sin behind; when we came up out of the water, we entered into the new country of grace - a new life in a new land!

So when we come to know Christ in faith, we enter a new relationship with God, but also a new relationship with sin.  Sin is still our enemy, but it is not our master.  The central fact at the heart of the gospel about the penalty of sin is this: you are clean.  But the central fact about the power of sin is this: you are free.  Sin is no longer your master.  Its presence is another matter.  It is still part of our lives and will be here as long as we are in this world.  We do not become people who never struggle and never fail.  But we have a new, Christ-given character.  We are in the process of being re-made from the inside out.  So it is no longer in our nature to live with sin in the driver’s seat of our lives.  We were made for better things, and we are learning to live in line with that reality.

In Victor Hugo’s famous novel, Les Miserables, Jean Valjean is a man who has been in prison for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread.  He is now out of prison, physically free, but life there has left him a hard, broken person.  He receives the kindness of a priest, who catches him stealing but leads him to begin life as an honest man rather than having the police take him away.  This is a life-changing event for Jean, but there is still a mighty struggle between his old self and his new self.

One day a child drops a silver coin in front of Jean.  He puts his foot on it and refuses to give it back.  When the boy runs away in fear, Jean has to face himself, and he is shocked and horrified to see the person that he still is.  He wants to be an honest man, yet there is still a cruel spirit in control of him.  Jean spends many hours torn apart on the inside, deeply regretting what he has done.  At this point, Hugo writes a line describing Jean’s inner struggle and growing commitment to turn away from the sin that is controlling him.  He says about Jean’s taking the coin, “He committed a deed of which he was no longer capable.”

When we begin to follow Christ, sin becomes something that goes against the new heart, new mind, new character that God has begun forming in us.  As we grow in Christ, like Jean, we find that committing sin becomes something that is not in character for us, goes against the nature we now have.

There is no doubt that we can and do still sin.  But it is behavior that does not fit us any longer.  It is beginning to smell bad to us.

Paul tells us why.  When we were baptized, we were buried together with Christ in His death, v. 4 tells us.  And in v. 8, “We died with Christ.”  Dead people do not do bad things, do they.  So God teaches us to think of ourselves as if we had already died, as far as the will to commit sin goes.  In other words, we could say, “My alcohol habit was crucified with Christ.”  “My struggle to quit looking at pornographic Web sites was crucified with Christ.”  “My plans not to report part of my income on my tax forms was crucified with Christ.”  It’s because sin is no longer our master.

(2) Now Christ is our master.  That’s the good news that v. 22a tells us: “God has made you his slaves.”  If you keep reading into the next chapter, you see Paul describing the hold that sin has on him.  From v. 14 onward, he says things like “I don't do the good things I want to do. I keep on doing the evil things I don't want to do” (v. 19).  He tells in very honest terms about his inner struggle to become free from the power of sin.

Finally, almost in despair, he asks (v. 24b), “Who will save me from this sin that brings death to my body?”  There’s something important in the wording of that question.  He doesn’t ask, “What will save me. . . ?” or “How can I save myself. . . ?”  He is asking the right question: “Who will save me. . . ?”  We may look at our addictions and begin with “What” or “How” and decide that the way out is through spiritual disciplines (prayer, fasting, etc.), physical exercise, medicines from our doctors, accountability groups, counseling, or other things.  These often are good things and can help in important ways.

But they are not enough without the key thing, God’s word tells us.  That is Christ Himself.  Paul answers his own question in 7:25: “I give thanks to God. He will do it through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

That’s what he means when he tells us in 6:14b, “God's grace has set you free.”  Then in v. 18: “You have been set free from sin. You have become slaves to right living.”  Earlier in chapter 6, he has described how freedom from addiction is possible: through unity with Christ.  In 6:4 (The Message version) it reads, “When we are lowered into the water, it is like the burial of Jesus; when we are raised up out of the water, it is like the resurrection of Jesus.”  We die to sin as He died.  We are raised to new life as He was, to live under His control, not that of sin.  I like the way The Message puts it in vv. 16b-18: “All your lives you’ve let sin tell you what to do. But thank God you’ve started listening to a new master, one whose commands set you free to live openly in his freedom!”

Thanks to Christ, you are free to choose to live under the leadership of your Father in Heaven.  Sin is no longer your master.  Christ is your Master.

(3) Then, when you have placed your life in Christ’s hands, living with Him as your Master sets you free.  There is a paradox there, isn’t there.  We may think of freedom as having no master of any kind and doing whatever we want.  But life doesn’t work that way, the Bible’s God teaches us.  In fact, great suffering and trouble often appear when people with sometimes selfish and unloving motives begin doing whatever we want.  A more peaceful life is possible when we choose to place ourselves under Christ’s direction, the Bible teaches.  James 1:25 and 2:12, for example, use an interesting phrase to talk about this: “the . . . law of liberty” (King James Version).  When a just, loving, all-wise God makes good laws to guide human society, following them is not limiting and freedom-robbing.  In fact, it leads us through a life of the greatest type of freedom.

So when God in His word tells us to make Christ our Master, He is not telling us to give up our lives and become something we are not.  He is telling us how to find our true, best selves and live the life that God in His love and wisdom has planned for us as His children.  The message, in other words, is: be

who you really are.  Live in ways that match your true identity in Christ.  Be the person you were made by God to be.  Live out of your identity as a child of God.

To do that, you have to stop living as someone you really are not.  But that can be remarkably difficult and take a lot of time and adjusting before it really happens.  Think, for example, of a time you may have traveled across many time zones and become jet lagged.  If you have that experience, you know it takes time to adjust to the new reality of where you actually are.  For a while, your body tells you it’s time to wake up when it’s really time to be asleep.  Then when it’s time to be awake, your body fights against you, demanding sleep.

So what can you do?  You can keep your days and nights reversed for the rest of your life.  Or you can go through the process of changing your behavior, even when it doesn’t feel right, to adjust to the time zone you are now in.  It takes some time, effort, and intentionality to learn to live where you really are.  Again, God’s command to us is: be who you are.  Live out of the reality that you have been made a child of God.  Make your thoughts, words, and actions match your identity.  You are a fully forgiven, fully loved child of God, who has placed his/her life in your Father’s hands.  Find ways to let that truth guide the way you live each day.

In the U.S. after the Civil War ended in 1865, many African Americans were legally free, yet it wasn’t as if all their troubles went away and everything suddenly became great.  After years and years of living in bondage, there continued to be real struggles to actually live economically and politically and socially and spiritually in the freedom that they already had legally.

In the same way, as we learn to live in our true identity as children of God, we will have struggles.  We need the habit of telling ourselves the truth about ourselves.  That is, we may battle for the rest of our lives in this world with sins of addiction, but in the end, God wins.  In the end, we will overcome with God’s help and live with Him in heaven forever, free from the penalty, the power, and even the presence of sin.

That’s the good news I have to bring to you today.  Praise God for it.  Now let’s go to Him in prayer.

Patient, powerful, loving Father, we remember your promise in the Bible (I Corinthians 10:13) that you will not let us be tempted any more than we can take.  But You will give us a way out so that we can stand up under that temptation.  Help us to hold tightly to that promise.  We cannot overcome our various addictions without your help.  So teach us to constantly turn to you and keep your face before the eyes of our hearts.  Help each day to be an experience in trusting you to meet all our true needs.  Give us the strength to overcome temptations when they come.  And thank you that whatever combination of victories and failures we have from day to day, nothing can change the standing you have given us before you as your children.  Enable us to stand firm in your unchanging, amazing grace, we pray in Christ’s strong name.  Amen.
