「イエス様に目を向けて」
ガラテヤ６：１４～１６
Galatians 6:14-16 ● As for me, may I never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of that cross, my interest in this world has been crucified, and the world’s interest in me has also died. It doesn’t matter whether we have been circumcised or not. What counts is whether we have been transformed into a new creation. May God’s peace and mercy be upon all who live by this principle; they are the new people of God.
● しかし、わたし自身には、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの十字架以外 に、誇とするものは、断じてあってはならない。この十字架につけられ て、この世はわたしに対して死に、わたしもこの世に対して死んでしまっ たのである。 割礼のあるなしは問題ではなく、ただ、新しく造られること こそ、重要なのである。 この法則に従って進む人々の上に、平和とあ われみとがあるように。また、神のイスラエルの上にあるように
Ephesians 5:1-19● 7. Don’t participate in the things these people do. 8. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of the light! 9. For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.
John 3:16-21● 16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17. For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. 18. He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has two believed in the name of the one and only Son of God. 19. This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. 20. For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 21. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.” I recently started a book club and in this club there are just four members. We meet every three months to discuss a book that we had selected at the previous meeting.
最近、読書クラブを作りました。たった4人しかいないクラブです。三ヶ月に一度会って、前回選んだ 本に関していろいろ話し合います。 There is one individual in the group who I really like as a person but in his comments it’s clear to me that he has a deep dislike for Christianity. Actually, I think it is more accurate to say that he probably has more like a hatred for Christianity. He frequently blames it for some of the world’s problems. そのクラブに1人の友達の事すごく好きですが、彼の発言によりますと、明らかにキリスト教をあんま り好きじゃないことがわかります。あんまり好きじゃないというより、結構嫌いかなと感じます。世界の 色んな問題をキリスト教のせいにする人です。
This individual made an interesting comment the other day. He said, “Well, most people are Christians just because their parents are anyway, right?” I had to think about that for a while. While that is likely true of the church that I grew up in, that’s not actually true of this church here. Recently when I come to church, I think about each member and realized that the majority of the church members here were largely not brought up in Christians homes. Our church members are here mainly because they had a unique and very special encounter with Jesus Christ and that to me is really special.
前回、その友達が面白いことを言いました。「"どうせ、ほとんどのクリスチャンは親がクリスチャンだ からということでしょう？」それを聞いた私はじっくり考えました。子供の頃の教会を考えるとその発言 にあってハマると思いますが、この教会はそうではない。最近、教会に来ると、教会員一人一人のこ とを考えて、このことに気づきました。ここの教会員の大半は、クリスチャンの家庭に育っていないこ とがほとんどであること。私たちの教会員がここにいるのは、主にイエス・キリストとのユニークで非 常に特別な出会いがあったからだと思います。私にとってはそれが本当に特別で素敵なことなので す。
When I came to Japan, in both my old church in Aomori and here, I was asked whether I had grown up in a Christian home by more than one person and when I said, “Yes”, I remember sometimes people would say, “Iona~” and “urayamashii”
言いました 日本に来たとき、青森の教会でもこのオープンドアでも、複数の人から「あなたはクリスチャンホーム で育ったのですか」と聞かれ、「はい」と答えると、時々こう言われたのを覚えています。「いいな〜」と か「うらやましい」とか。
You know, I had to really think about that one. To be honest, I have never felt that I was particularly privileged because I was raised in a Christian home. I felt there was something missing.
本当に考えさせられました。正直なところ、私はキリスト教の家庭で育ったことは感謝しているのです が、何か物足りなさを感じていました。
One of the things that keeps me a Christian — and there are many — is that over my five decades of life, I have been able to witness the change that people go through when they become followers of Jesus Christ. It can be incredibly dramatic.
私がクリスチャンであり続ける理由の一つは、50年以上の人生の中で、人々がイエス・キリストの信 者になったときに経験する変化を目（ま）の当たりにすることができたからです。それは信じられない ほどドラマチックなことです。
That first fresh encounter with God. I’ve seen intense joy. I’ve seen a burning desire to learn more. A desire to read the Bible as much as possible to understand it more deeply. I’ve seen strong desires, almost an urge, to share about Jesus Christ with others. To share that experience and want others to have that experience too.
新しくイエス様に出会った人たちの様子を見た経験がなんども有りました。その新鮮な出会いとその 深い喜び。そういう人たちが聖書をもっと深く理解するために、できるだけ多くの知識を得たいという 願望があります。イエス・キリストについて他の人と分かち合いたいという強い願望。
My own decision to become a Christian was at a very young age. Five years old. I remember it, kind of, but I don’t remember the change that it brought. My mother did. She could see it. She knew that I was a different person because I had met Jesus.
私がクリスチャンになる決心は幼い時だった。5歳でした。その時覚えていますが、クリアではないの と私はその後どう変わったのかを覚えてない。母は覚えてます。母はその変化を見てました。イエス に会って私は変わりましたと後で話をしてくれました。
How about your own experience of becoming a Christian? Do you remember that experience? Do you remember that feeling? Did it change your life?
教会の皆さんはどうでしょうか。クリスチャンになった時の気持ちを覚えていますか。日常が変わりま したか。
If we look back at Ephesians 5: 8-9. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of the light! 9. For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.
エペソ人への手紙の5章8−9節に戻りましょう。「 あなたがたは、以前はやみであったが、今は主に あって光となっている。光の子らしく歩きなさい―― 9 光はあらゆる善意と正義と真実との実を結ばせるものである―― 」 When people meet Jesus they literally shine. Have you seen that before? Did you recognize it in yourself when you became a Christian. That experience has the power to hold you and keep you as a Christian for the rest of your lives.
イエスに出会うとき、全ての人が輝きます。それを見たことがありますか？クリスチャンになったとき、 自分の中にそれを認識しましたか？その体験は、あなたを一生クリスチャンでいさせる力を持ってい ます。
Although I don’t have a strong memory of that time, I do know that my continued commitment to follow Jesus Christ has changed the direction of my life.
私はクリスチャンになった時のことを強く覚えているわけではありませんが、イエス・キリストに従い続 けることが、私の人生の方向を変えたということは確かです。
We are to be different. We don’t always live to the best of who we should be in Christ BUT、and this is a big point, I still think that each and every one of us is a better person because we choose to follow Christ.
私たちはイエスによって変わるべきです。これは大きなポイントですが、私たち一人一人は、キリスト に従うことを選んだからこそ、より良い人間であると私は思ってます。
Many of you have met my father. He’s big, he’s loud, he can be really annoying for me. I know his strengths and I really know his weaknesses. I know his weak points and his inconsistencies. And he’s a minister of Jesus Christ.
私の父に会ったことがある人は多いと思います。宣教師と牧師と聖書学校の講師、それぞれの経験 もある人です。彼は大きくて、うるさくて、長く一緒にいると私はイライラする。父の良いところと弱点 がよくわかります。
When I was a teenager, a time when we all struggle with our parents, I often had this thought. Despite all my father’s weak points, I knew that he would have been a far more difficult person (and by that I mean a far more sinful person) had he not been saved and changed by Jesus Christ.
10代の頃、誰もが親との関係に悩む時期でも有りますが、私はよくこんなことを思っていました。父に は弱いところもあったが、イエス・キリストによって救われ、変えられていなければ、もっと難しい人間 （つまり、もっと罪深い人間）になっていただろうと思ってます。
Back to those verses again. So live as people of the light. For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true.
もう一度エペソの箇所を読みましょう。「 あなたがたは、以前はやみであったが、今は主にあって光 となっている。光の子らしく歩きなさい―― 9 光はあらゆる善意と正義と真実との実を結ばせるものである―― 」
Well, I can tell you that I have not always lived as a person of the light and I have not always shone my best in life. I believe Hokusei’s motto is to, “Shine like stars in a dark world.” Love that motto but it’s difficult to achieve, isn’t it.
私はいつも光の人として生きてきたわけではなく、輝いていたわけでもない。北星学院のモットーは
"Shine like stars in a dark world "です。そのモットーは大好きですが、実践するのは難しいですね。 Yet, I also believe that I am a better person than I would be if I were not a Christian. It’s my conscience. It makes me think every day. It’s what helps me to make choices each day. It’s also God’s presence in my life that makes me to feel guilt and to reflect when I make mistakes. それでも、クリスチャンにならなかったよりはマシな人間になったと思ってます。精霊は私の良心で す。聖霊の働きにより私は毎日考えさられます。毎日正しい道を選択するのを助けてくれるのです。 また、私の人生における神様の存在が、私が間違いを犯したときに罪悪感を感じさせ、反省させるの です。
Why is living a pure life difficult? Well, that’s pretty clear. In our natural condition, human beings prefer to live the way we want. John 3: 19 points that out. “…and men loved the darkness rather than the light…”. As I watch the world and see the incredible stresses we are going through everywhere on this planet, this is becoming more and more clear to me. Recently I feel that the world has gone through a major shift again. I sense there's something wrong. We in the church have likely thought too much about this point. However, because we have such power today in technology and through massive human populations, we have the power to do so much damage this concern has grown deeper. We are doing damage. Evil seems ever present.
なぜ神様によう正しい生き方が難しいのか、人間は生まれながらにして、自分の好きなように生きた いものです。ヨハネによる福音書3章19節はそのことを指摘しています。「人は光よりも闇を愛し た......」と書いてあります。この地球上のいたるところで、信じられないようなストレスがかかっている のを毎日のように見ています。最近、世界が大きく変化しているように感じます。何かおかしいと感じ るのです。テクノロジーを通して、大きな打撃を与える力を持っているので、この懸念はより深くなっ ています。私たちは打撃を与えているのです。悪は常に存在しているように見えます。
The technology we have today has taken what people considered sinful behavior and made it accessible. Humans get used to things pretty quickly when they see it too much. We make it part of the mainstream of daily life. We mainstream it. And then we come to accept it as the new normal. As this happens, we will find that the moral書いてあります values we hold in Jesus Christ, the moral teachings of the Bible, will become out of step with the world around us.
今日のテクノロジーは、人々がひどく罪深い行為だと考えていたものを、身近なものにしてしまいまし た。人間はそれを見過ぎるとすぐに慣れてしまいます。私たちはそれを日常生活一部にしてしまって います。そうなると、私たちがイエス・キリストに抱く道徳的価値観、つまり聖書の道徳的教えが、周 囲の世界とずれていくことがわかるでしょう。
So what do we do? We are fortunate in that we have a model to follow. That’s Jesus Christ. In fact, that’s the only reliable model we can have. Our friends can and do fall away from Christian faith but Jesus of course doesn’t and he has left us with himself as the model to follow. We can continue to renew our faith in following him.
では、どうすればいいのでしょうか。幸いなことに、私たちには従うべきモデルがあります。それは、イ エス・キリストです。実際、私たちが持つことのできる唯一の信頼できるモデルなのです。教会から、 信仰から離れてしまう友達はいる。過去にもこれからもそういったことを経験すると思いますがイエス はもちろんそのようなことは有りません。彼自身が私たちの模範となるようにこの世に来られました。 そのゆえに新たな信仰を持ち続けることが出来るのです。
When I was young, I heard again and again that we had to allow time for God. We had to make time in our busy lives and ensure we had time to set aside time to talk to God, to read the Bible and to pray. At the time I never really thought my life was busy. In the 1970s, in fact even in the 1980s, I never felt that life was too busy.
私は若い頃、「神様との時間を作らなければならないよ」という言葉を何度も聞きました。時間を作 り、神と話し、聖書を読み、祈る時間を確保しなければならなよと言われました。当時、私は自分の 生活が忙しいと思ったことはありませんでした。1970年代、1980年代でも、人生が忙しいと思ったこ とはありませんでした。
Now I see the importance of what my elders told me then. The internet, our phones, have dramatically altered life. We are weak as human beings and we likely spend too much time on our phones. I know I do. This is an age, more than ever, to ensure that we spend quality time with God. Turn off our phones, allow God into our lives. As we do that, it will be easier to let go of the things that bind us to earthly life and allow us to focus on the most important relationship we have. Our relationship with God. He will do the rest for us.
子供の頃の年上のクリスチャンが言っていたことの重要性が、今になってよくわかります。インター ネット、スマホは生活を劇的に変化させました。私たち人間はとても弱く、携帯電話に依存する傾向 にあります。私もそうです。今こそ、神との時間を大切にする時代です。携帯電話の電源を切り、神 様との時間を過ごしましょう。そうすれば、この世的なものから簡単に解放され、もっと大切なことに 集中することができます。それは神様との関係です。あとは神様が整えてくださいます。
There is a beautiful English hymn that expresses the meaning of Galatians 6:14-16 ガラテヤ6:14-16の意味を表現した美しい英語の讃美歌があります。
● Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace.
● イエスに目を向け、その素晴らしい御顔を見てください。そうすれば、イエスの栄光と恵みの 光の中で、世界のものが不思議なほど消えていくでしょう。 As life becomes dim to us, (and by that I mean that when life becomes less important to us), Jesus Christ can fill us once again and bring back some of that sparkle, some of that brightness, light and joy, and we can shine again like the stars we are to be. この世的なものが消えていくと（つまり自己満足が中心ではなくなる時）イエス・キリストは私たちをも う一度満たし、その輝き、明るさ、光、喜びを取り戻し、私たちが星のように再び輝かせることが出来るのです。
